Welcome to Slow Food Delmarva!

Slow Food is an idea, a way of living and a way of eating. It's a global, grassroots movement with members around the world campaigning for a commitment to a better community, a better environment and better food - and we're here to help do our part for Delmarva.

Delmarva rests on the eastern shore of the Delaware, Maryland and Virginia watershed encompassing Kent, Sussex, Worchester and Wicomico County including the Delaware beach towns north till Dover Delaware and South including Ocean City, Salisbury Maryland and parts of Virginia. The chapter began on the Delaware shore and now has gained many new members from both Wicomico and Worcester counties, which has allowed us to officially call our chapter "Slow Food Delmarva!"

We live on a coastal plain that has flat, fertile soil, long growing climate, an abundance of farm land, wooded areas, beaches, bays, marsh land with 2,430 farms encompassing 490,000 acres of farm land defined as a “zone 7 hardiness zone.” Southern Delaware alone has 19 farmers markets, has a rich history of road side BBQ stands as well as an abundance of individual produce stands that function on the honor system.

Delmarva residents strive to preserve historic and local traditions of buying locally and selling locally. Many farmers in the area already promote farm to table practices while local restaurants utilize local traditional cuisine such as soft shell crabs, rockfish, Delaware beach plums, chickens, scrapple, sweet corn, tomatoes, peaches, squash & zucchini as well as countless other local delicacies.

Slow Food Delmarva is dedicated to protecting all of these traditions, traits and tastes - and we partner with community leaders and volunteers alike to help accomplish our goals.
